Bittersweet Yogic Christmas
This morning before sunrise I witnessed my two teachers Rashmi – the jolly yogini baker transform into an elegant dancing swan and Narash- the energized semi-sarcastic yogi bloom into a beautiful white lily after a long hard winter. “What did you say?” “You don’t believe me?” We’ll then ask any other of the 48 angels that were there. The Swan and Lily then came to me and said “You’re gift from us is to become a fruit seed.” “A fruit seed?” I replied. “We’ll that is not fair.” For you Rashmi are an elegant dancing swan and you Narash…a beautiful white lily. They spoke to me in a bittersweet tone and said… “Sush…Sush! You must receive what we have given you and go. For if you stay here; you will soon die. The outside world will offer you the sun, the wind and the rain to survive. Within time, you will grow to become a sweet nectar tree. Until then invite the world to help you flourish. When you are ready you will evolve. You will become as elegant as a dancing swan and as beautiful as a white lily and others, like you now, will have the gift of picking your ever so sweet fruit from your vine. So, Merry Yogic Christmas, Jai Bhagwan and Goodbye. Written by Carlene Sullivan R.Y.T. 10/23/2004

How Yoga Saved my Life
By Carlene Sullivan.... It all started on a blustery winter morning. The temperature was at 26 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of 35 miles per hour bringing the temperature down to negative 5. I thought to my self “what a better way then to test out all my new mountain gear.” I had “polypropylene this” and “gortex that” and every other new technology outdoor wear you can imagine. I was convinced that once in my new wear with these temperatures; I would feel as though I was in the Caribbean. So I decided to head north to Evans Notch, New Hampshire where beauty and serenity collide to create a Mecca for outdoor fun. I trekked around throughout the day feeling fabulous, warm & strong. There even was some small ice slabs for me to work on my technique of becoming a novice skilled climber. This new gear of mine is awesome, I thought. I continued my excursion for a few more hours and decided to head back. The day was growing colder and I knew night fall would be venturing in soon. I threw my crampons, ice axes and gloves in the back seat and began to warm up my vehicle for the 30 minute ride back to civilization. To my dismay, my engine would not turn over. I tried again and again, beginning to panic knowing that only a crazy soul would be out here at this hour and in these temperatures to go get some help. My cell phone battery was dead and even if it wasn’t I’m sure that there would not have been any service. I began to get cold; fast. Taking Wilderness First Aid, I brought the basics into play. Step number one. Survey the scene. Survey the scene? I am in the middle of no where, in a broken down vehicle, no cell phone service, the temp down to who knows what by now, and about a thousand dollars worth of outdoor garb which is not even keeping me warm. With first stages of hyperthermia setting in soon; I thought to myself, “this is it….I’m dead.” Knowing that a pair of crampons and ice axes would not save me now, I began to scan the interior of my car. Being a local area yoga teacher, all I had was 10 yoga mats and a CD player filled with brand new batteries and my favorite meditative CD, Shamanic Dream. I had to think quickly and act immediately. I began to lay down the seats, flicked on my hazards and pressed play and then repeat on my CD player. I figured that hearing some soothing sounds would drown out the sound of the howling wind, which seemed to be screaming out my name in vein. I then grabbed the yoga mats and starting down by my feet; I slowly and consciously began to wrap the yoga mats one by one around my entire body until I was completed covered from head to toe in a colorful array of yoga mats creating a human Yogini burrito. I laid flat on my back and began to focus on my breathing. I knew it was only about 5pm, so I had a long wait ahead of me. I started with the Dirgha breath. Beginning to expand the breath through the stomach first, bringing the breath up towards my rib cage, as high up to the collar bones as possible, and then bringing the breath back down navel towards the spine. The Dirgha breath, known as the three part breath has been known to oxygenate the blood throughout the entire body, while calming the mind and enhancing introversion. Don’t fail me now, I thought. So, I delved deeper and deeper until I could almost hear my heartbeat. I was warm, content & focused, to the point where I was in a blissful subconscious state. Anytime my mind began to wonder, conquering up possible scenarios that may never even happen; I shifted back inward towards my breath. I began to vision the breath working through my torso, diaphragm up towards my thorax and back down through my body like an ocean wave. The music and the breath slowly bringing me into a quiet serene meditative space, where I could hear my soul sing. Then my body and mind stunned itself to silence. The next thing I remember was the faint sound of a snowmobile. Its daylight, I thought. I made it!!! I prayed towards the higher divinity. Please, please come this way. The sound of the snowmobile grew stronger and stronger until it seemed as though it was right on top of me. The engine stopped and I heard a knock on my window. A mans voice, strong and firm said. “Are you OK?” I couldn’t move in my burrito state so I wiggled around and replied “Hi, I’m OK.” He claimed he’d be back in 30 minutes with some help. That night sitting by the fire in my cottage by the lake with an extra large piece of vegetarian Lasagna, my sweetness of a chocolate lab Hadley, and my favorite book; I stopped for a moment..... gazed into the flames and thanked God. And that’s how Yoga saved my life. Carlene enjoys writing fiction and non-fiction tales that inspire the soul.
